Blue Lagoon or Nusa Penida manta snorkeling? Which should I pick?
Blue Lagoon is the easier day and the one most people book. It is a sheltered bay at Padang Bai on Bali's east coast, the water is clear, and you are snorkelling over reef close to shore. It suits families, first-timers and anyone who wants the sea without a big commitment.
The Nusa Penida manta trip is a different proposition. It means a boat crossing to another island and snorkelling in open water, and the draw is the chance of swimming near manta rays. It asks more of you and it takes the whole day, but it is the bucket-list version.
Where is Blue Lagoon, and how long is the day?
Blue Lagoon sits at Padang Bai, on the eastern coast. It is a proper drive from Ubud and longer again from the southern beach areas, which is why every package on this page runs as a full day rather than a half.
Your exact pickup time depends on where you are staying and what else is in the package. Send us your hotel and we will confirm it.
Do I need to swim well? Is it alright for children?
For Blue Lagoon you do not need to be a strong swimmer. It is a sheltered bay, a life jacket keeps you afloat without any effort, and the guide stays in the water with the group. Plenty of people snorkel for the first time here.
The Nusa Penida manta trip is open water with current, so that one does ask you to be comfortable in the sea. If you are bringing children, or anyone nervous in water, tell us before booking and we will steer you to the right one.
What will I actually see?
At Blue Lagoon, clear water over coral with plenty of reef fish. It is a genuinely good snorkelling spot rather than a bay with a nice name, which is why it is the one we run.
Marine life is wild, so what turns up varies with the day, the tide and the season. Nobody can promise you a particular animal, and the manta trips in Nusa Penida come with the same honest caveat.

Can I combine snorkeling with other activities?
Most of these packages already do, because the drive east is long enough that you may as well build a day around it. Blue Lagoon pairs with the rice terrace zipline and jungle swing, river tubing, the Gorilla Cave ATV, waterfalls and a Cretya sunset.
The most distinctive combination is the sunrise horse ride along the black volcanic sand beaches of east Bali before you get in the water. If you only want the snorkelling and nothing else, book the standalone Blue Lagoon trip.
What should I bring?
Swimwear under your clothes so you are not hunting for somewhere to change, plus a towel and a full change of clothes. Reef-safe sunscreen if you can get it, since you will be face down in the sun for a while and your back takes all of it.
A rash vest or t-shirt you can swim in helps more than sunscreen does. Leave valuables at your hotel, and if you want photos, use a proper waterproof case with a strap.
