Mount Batur sunrise trekking: frequently asked questions

What people ask us before booking the climb.

How hard is the trek?

The climb takes around two hours to the summit at 1,717 metres. There is no scrambling and nothing technical, but it is steadily uphill on loose volcanic ground, in the dark, and it gets steeper towards the top.

Most reasonably active people manage it. If you walk regularly you will be fine. If you have not walked uphill for years, it will be harder than you expect, and the jeep tour exists for exactly that reason.

How early does it start?

Your day begins in pre-dawn darkness. To be on the summit before the sun comes up you are being picked up in the small hours, and the exact time depends on where you are staying. Pickup from Ubud is later than from Seminyak or Canggu.

We confirm your pickup time once we know your hotel. Get an early night beforehand, and remember the day carries on after sunrise, since every package here continues into other activities.

Do I need hiking experience, and who can join?

No experience needed. A certified guide leads the group the whole way, sets the pace, and knows the route in the dark. You do not need equipment beyond decent shoes and warm clothes.

What matters more is fitness and footing. If you are bringing children, or anyone with a knee, heart, breathing or mobility concern, message us before booking with the details and we will tell you honestly whether the trek works or whether the jeep is the better call.

Should I trek or take the jeep?

Trek if you want to stand on the summit. You earn the view, you are above the cloud layer as the light comes up, and it is the version people remember. It costs you two hours of climbing in the dark.

Take the jeep if the climb is not realistic, or you are travelling with family who cannot manage it. A 4WD drives you to a viewpoint on the caldera with no hiking involved. Same sunrise, different vantage point. Those packages are in our jeep tour section.

What is included?

A certified trekking guide, breakfast at the summit, and free hotel pickup. Eating breakfast on top of a volcano while the sun comes up over the caldera is a large part of why people book this.

Most packages here also include a natural hot spring afterwards, plus whatever the other activities in the combo require. If something matters to you and you cannot see it listed, ask before you book.

What should I wear and bring?

Proper closed shoes with grip. This is the one thing people get wrong, and sandals on loose volcanic ground in the dark is a bad combination. Bring a jacket or hoodie and long trousers, because it is genuinely cold up there before sunrise and much warmer by the time you come down. Layers work best.

Your guide leads with a torch, but bring a headtorch or keep your phone charged if you want your own light. Water, and swimwear plus a towel if your package includes the hot spring.

Is the hot spring worth adding?

Yes, and the timing is the reason. You come down off the mountain with tired legs, having been cold for hours, and a natural hot spring at that exact moment lands better than it would at any other point in the day.

It is included in most of the packages here. Pack swimwear and a towel if yours has it.

How do I book?

Book straight from any package page, or message us and we will sort it. Every package here pairs the trek with something else for the rest of the day, so tell us your dates, your group, and where you are staying, and we will suggest the combination that fits.
