What is the Mount Batur jeep sunrise tour?
A 4WD jeep drives you up to a sunrise viewpoint on the Mount Batur caldera in the dark, so you are in position as the light comes up over the volcano and the lake. From there the jeep continues across the black lava field and along the Kaldera trail, which is terrain you cannot reach in a normal car.
Most of the packages here carry on into the rest of the day, pairing the sunrise with a natural hot spring, the Gorilla Cave ATV, rafting, tubing, the rice terrace swing or a Cretya sunset to finish.
Should I take the jeep or hike Mount Batur?
The jeep requires no hiking. You are driven to the viewpoint and you get the same sunrise without the climb, which is why it suits families, older travellers, and anyone who does not fancy a pre-dawn ascent in the dark.
The trek is the harder and more rewarding version. It is a real climb to the summit and it takes a couple of hours in the dark, but you stand on top of the volcano rather than looking across at it. If that is what you want, book from our Mount Batur trekking packages instead.
How early does it start?
Very early. To be at the viewpoint before first light you are being picked up in the small hours, and the exact time depends on how far your hotel is from Batur. Ubud is closer than Seminyak or Canggu, so the pickup time shifts accordingly.
We confirm your pickup time once we know where you are staying. Plan on an early night beforehand, and remember the rest of the day continues after sunrise if you have booked a combo.
Is it suitable for children, older travellers, or anyone who cannot hike?
This is the reason the jeep tour exists. There is no climbing involved, you are seated for the drive, and the walking at the viewpoint is minimal. It is the way to get a Batur sunrise into a trip when a summit trek is off the table.

What are the black lava field and the Kaldera trail?
The black lava field is the hardened flow left behind by Batur's eruptions. It is a dark, broken expanse of volcanic rock with almost nothing growing on it, and driving across it looks nothing like the rest of Bali.
The Kaldera trail runs around the caldera rim with views down over the crater and Lake Batur. Between them they are the reason to take the jeep rather than just driving to a viewpoint and turning around.
What is included?
The jeep with its driver, a local guide, and free hotel pickup. Several packages also include the natural hot spring afterwards, which is a good way to warm up once the sun is properly up.

What should I wear and bring?
It is genuinely cold up on the caldera before sunrise, and people underestimate this constantly. Bring a jacket or a hoodie, long trousers, and closed shoes. The jeep is open, so the wind makes it colder again.
Once the sun is up it warms quickly, so layers you can peel off work best. If you have booked the hot spring, pack swimwear and a towel.
