What people ask us before booking the island crossing.
East, west, or both? Which tour should I pick?
The west is the famous side. Kelingking Beach with its dinosaur-shaped headland, Angel's Billabong, Broken Beach and Crystal Bay all sit over there, and it is the one to book if this is your only day on the island and you want the views you have already seen in photographs.
The east is quieter and greener, with Diamond Beach, Atuh Beach, the Thousand Islands viewpoint and the cliffside treehouses. Fewer crowds, and the drive out there is part of it.
The mixed east and west tour covers both, but it is a long day with a lot of driving and less time standing still at each stop. Take it if you only have one day and cannot bear to miss either side. Check each package description for the exact stops on the day.
How do I get there, and how long is the crossing?
Nusa Penida is a separate island, so the day starts with a fast boat from Bali. The crossing is short, usually well under an hour, but the water between the islands can be choppy.
If you are prone to seasickness, take something before you board rather than after. Message us with your hotel and we will confirm your pickup time and departure details.
How long is the day?
Full day, and it starts early. Between the drive to the harbour, the crossing, a day of stops on the island and the boat back, you are out from early morning until evening.
Worth knowing before you plan around it: this is not a trip you pair with something else on the same day.
Will I definitely see manta rays?
No, and be wary of anyone who promises otherwise. Mantas are wild animals in open water, so sightings depend on the day, the season and the conditions. They are seen regularly, which is why the trip exists, but nobody can guarantee them.
When they do show up it is worth the trip. These are large animals, with wingspans reaching up to five metres, and watching one pass underneath you is not something you forget.
Do I need to be a strong swimmer for the snorkeling?
You should be comfortable in open water. This is not a shallow reef you can stand up in, and there can be current, so it asks more of you than a beach snorkel.
A life jacket and gear are provided, and the guides stay with the group. If anyone in your party is a weak swimmer or nervous in deep water, tell us before you book and we will point you at the land tours instead.
What is included?
A day trip normally covers the return boat crossing, transport around the island, and a local guide, with hotel pickup on the Bali side. Snorkeling packages include the gear.

What should I wear and bring?
Shoes you can walk in. The viewpoints involve steps and uneven ground, and the descent to Kelingking Beach in particular is a serious set of stairs that plenty of people turn back from. Sandals will not do.
Sunscreen, water, and a hat, because there is very little shade at the clifftops. If your package includes snorkeling, bring swimwear, a towel and a change of clothes. The island roads are narrow and rough in places, so hold onto anything loose.
