Bali Adventure Activities With Kids: Age Limits and Safety
Planning an adventure day in Bali gets complicated the moment children are involved. Every activity has its own cut-off, and they do not line up. The worst outcome is arriving at base camp to find one child is not allowed to join.
This guide sets out the actual age, height and weight rules for the main outdoor activities around Ubud, which ones let a child ride with an adult, what safety equipment is provided, and what to do when your child is still too young.
The question that decides everything: can they ride with an adult?
Most rules split into two numbers. There is a minimum age to operate something yourself, and a lower minimum age to ride along as a passenger with an adult driving.
That distinction is what makes family days possible. A seven year old cannot drive a quad bike, but she can sit behind a parent on the same machine. Once you know which activities offer a tandem seat, planning gets much easier.
Age and weight limits at a glance
| Activity | Age rule | Ride with an adult? | Other limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| ATV, driving | 16 to 60 years | No, driver rides alone | Insurance covers ages 5 to 60 |
| ATV, tandem passenger | 5 to 15 years | Yes, adult drives, child sits behind | Two people maximum per machine |
| Buggy, driving | 18 years and above | No, driver only | Two seats maximum |
| Buggy, tandem passenger | 7 to 17 years | Yes, adult drives, child sits beside | Two seats maximum |
| White water rafting | 6 to 60 years | Yes, guide steers every raft | Life jacket fitted to each person |
| River tubing | 5 to 60 years | Yes, guides accompany the group | Own tube per person |
| Zipline or flying fox | Set by weight, not age | Yes on some lines | Minimum 40kg, maximum 109kg |
| Jungle swing | 7 years and above | Yes | Also depends on height and build |
Two numbers on that table catch families out more than any other. Read on before you build the day around them.
The 40kg zipline rule
Ziplines are limited by weight rather than age, because the harness and braking system are calibrated for a range. The minimum is 40kg and the maximum is 109kg.
That 40kg floor is the surprise. Most children do not reach it until around 11 or 12, so a keen eight year old usually cannot ride, no matter how confident they are. Weigh your child before you build an itinerary around it.
At the top end, the 109kg ceiling applies to adults and is checked at the platform.
Water activities: rafting from 6, tubing from 5
Ayung River rafting starts at 6 years. Children sit in the middle of the raft between adults, everyone wears a life jacket and helmet, and a trained guide steers from the back. It is a grade 2 to 3 river, so expect bumps and splashes rather than serious drops.
River tubing starts a year earlier, at 5, and is the youngest-friendly activity on the list. Each person floats in their own tube with guides alongside the group. The water is calmer than the rafting route, though a child in their own tube needs to be comfortable in water.
Both carry an upper limit of 60 years, which matters if grandparents are joining.
Off-road with kids: the ATV is the younger option
Here is the correction most parents need. A buggy is not a family car with four seats. It is the same kind of off-road machine as a quad bike, just shaped like a small car with a roll cage and a steering wheel, and it seats two people at most. A bali buggy ride comes as either a single or a tandem, nothing larger.
That means a family of four always needs two vehicles, whichever type you pick.
Between the two, the ATV takes younger children. Tandem passengers can be as young as 5, against 7 for the buggy. The adult drives, the child sits behind and holds on. Buggy drivers must be 18, so a 16 or 17 year old who wants to drive is limited to a quad bike.
Off-road sessions run 60 to 90 minutes depending on the group’s speed and confidence, which is a manageable length for most children.
Safety equipment you should expect
Any reputable Ubud operator provides the following as standard, at no extra charge:
- Helmets for off-road riders and rafting participants
- Life jackets fitted to the individual, not one size for all
- Gloves and closed boots for off-road riders
- Full body harness with double carabiners for ziplines and swings
- A safety briefing before every activity, in English
- A guide who stays with the group throughout
If any of these are missing or feel rushed, that tells you something about the operator.
Building a day everyone can actually join
The trick with mixed ages is sequencing rather than compromise.
With a child of 5 or 6, start with tubing, then add a tandem seat on a bali quad bike in the afternoon. Both accept that age, and neither asks the child to control anything.
From 7 upward, the swing opens up and rafting is already available from 6, so a fuller day becomes possible. Save the flying fox bali for when everyone clears 40kg, or book it for the adults and older teens while younger children do the swing.
For children under 5, none of the activities above apply. Build the day around a waterfall visit, a rice terrace walk and pool time instead.

FAQ
Q: What is the youngest age for adventure activities in Bali?
A:
River tubing at 5 years, and a tandem ATV seat also from 5. Rafting starts at 6, the jungle swing and buggy tandem seats at 7. Children under 5 are better suited to waterfalls and rice terrace walks.
Q: Can my child ride an ATV with me in Bali?
A: Yes, on a tandem quad bike. The adult drives and the child rides behind, from 5 to 15 years old. Solo driving starts at 16.
Q: Why can’t my child do the zipline?
A: The zipline works on weight, not age. Riders must be between 40kg and 109kg for the harness and braking system to work as designed. Most children reach 40kg around age 11 or 12.
